At Nelson Middle School, our primary mission is to create an atmosphere for learning. By encompassing individual learning styles and talents, we strive to develop students capable of making responsible and intelligent choices. We encourage our students to establish a positive self-identity, to develop critical thinking skills, and to embrace a system of values.

Nelson Middle School is located one mile south of Lovingston in the center of Nelson County, Virginia. The only middle school in the county, NMS is home to approximately 415 students, 40 teachers, and 15 support staff. Nelson Middle School is fully accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Nelson Middle School offers a strong academic program in traditional core subjects plus excellent arts and career programs. Students can choose to participate in a wide variety of clubs and organizations that meet both during the school day and after school. Students in all grade levels can participate in NMS athletics and eighth-grade students are eligible to join NCHS athletic teams.

It is my pleasure to be joining the Nelson County School Division as the middle school principal! Here at Nelson Middle, home of the Mustangs, students will be engaged in quality instruction in both academics and extracurricular opportunities. We have offerings in athletics, fine arts, career and technology, and much more. We have outstanding students and staff at Nelson Middle and it is my goal to be the best middle school in the state!
Just a little bit about me...I grew up in Jefferson City,TN and spent my summers and vacation time in Bedford, Virginia, where my extended family now currently resides. I received a Bachelor's from Samford University in Music Education, a Master's from University of North Texas in Music Education, and an Ed.D in Educational Leadership and Policy studies from Tarleton State University. I have served as a teacher for ten years, a high school assistant principal for ten years, and a building principal for three years at both the middle school and high school levels.

Mrs. Shifflett earned her B.A. from Longwood University in 2007, her M.A. from The Ohio State University in 2009, and her endorsement in Educational Leadership from Longwood University in 2017. She is dedicated to inspiring, challenging, and guiding students to become committed, engaged citizens of the 21st century, contributing meaningfully to local and global communities for the betterment of themselves and others. Mrs. Shifflett's mission is to provide meaningful learning opportunities in every discipline by fostering strong relationships between students, parents, faculty and staff, and community members. Prior to her appointment as Nelson Middle School Assistant Principal, she was an English teacher and athletic coach at Nelson County High School for 10 years.She is honored to continue serving the division in this new capacity and is proud to be a Nelson Middle School Mustang.
