FAQs

How do I check my child's grades?

You have several ways to find out how your child is doing in his/her classes.  As always, you can call the school or email your child's teacher and request a progress report.  You can also log into the new Parent Portal (website) to see your child's current and historic grades and view your child's attendance record.  To access the Parent Portal, use the link in the Parent Resources section of this website.  Download instructions for setting up your Parent Portal Account.  If you do not have internet access, you can stop by the NMS office to use a school computer for accessing your Parent Portal Account.  If you have any questions about the Parent Portal, please call the school at (434) 263-4801 or email Lavider Hylton.

What are my child's homework assignments?

Core teachers maintain a Canvas site on which you can view homework assignments, upcoming tests, study guides, etc.

Do you offer tutoring?

Yes. Nelson Middle School provides FREE after-school tutoring Monday through Thursday each week.  Each day, several teachers stay late to work with students who need to make up work, review concepts, or want extra help in any subject.  Parents may pick up their students anytime before 5:45 PM.  Activity Buses are available to students who need transportation assistance.  These buses run abbreviated routes with specific drop-off locations (contact the school for details).  Please contact your student’s teacher for more information.

What is for lunch?

You can view the school lunch menu and pre-pay for school lunches online at the Nelson County Food & Nutrition Services website.  You will also find information on the free and reduced lunch program.
